You can use map packages to share map documents and associated data from ArcMap with other ArcMap users. A map package is created within ArcMap and contains the ArcMap document (.mxd) and all the data associated with that document.

.mxd files (maps) don't contain data. They just point to data. The can get lost pretty easily. This video helps you help Arc from losing its. You can use it to create new CAD files or append data to existing CAD files. The following steps describe how to use it to generate standard output: Open the Export To CAD tool dialog box. Drag one or more feature classes or shapefiles from the Catalog window into the Input Features text box. Saved ArcMap files have the.mxd extension. This file format is only usable within ArcMap. To share maps created within ArcMap, most cartographers will output the finished map to either an image file format or a PDF. The benefit of creating a PDF version of the map is that the individual layers can be turned on and off within the PDF file.
To create the .mpk file:
1. Click File to display the drop-down menu, and then click Create Map Package.
2. Choose to upload the file to your ArcGIS Online account or to save it on your hard drive.
