For my first tutorial in Serum I am going to show how to set things up for a pitched FX riser. I am going to lead you to a really great sound, but the great thing about this tutorial is that this patch can act as a template. After we set things up all you need to do is cycle through the noise and oscillator presets to find new and interesting sounds. You will also only need to manipulate one LFO to change the riser’s length and slope. You can also easily switch the direction of the curve to get a down shifter!!
If you don’t any of the presets I use just find something else that sounds nice. The method is meant to be versatile.

Choose a nice noise sound to get started. I am using the Liquid Saw Noise from the ASL Soundlab sound bank.
/metroid-prime-3-iso-download.html. Asl Soundlab – Liquid Saw
Now make sure both the pitch and the level for the noise are at 12 o’clock. Right click on them both and choose Mod Source and then LFO 1. Once they are mapped click and drag up on the LFO modulation level control until the blue line goes all the way right. The modulation level control is a small circular graphic at about 10 o’clock for each mappable parameter.
Note* if the LFO level is dual directional, meaning going to the left and right of the initial setting of the parameter, you can go to the Matrix panel and easily change it to one directional.
Now that we have some sound let’s set up the LFO. When I am designing the sound I like to keep the LFO frequency quite short so I don’t need to wait a long time to hear the sounds, like 1 bar, but the final riser can be 4, 8, 16 bars long.
You can make the ramp look however you want. I chose a fairly dramatic curve for my final patch.
LFO 1 – FX Riser Ramp Settings
For the Wavetable I was looking for the high pitched sign-ish sound. I went withe Basic_McB from the Analog bank.
Next I modulated the pitch and level controls to LFO 1. The pitch modulation control in Serum is the CSR parameter in the top right of the OSC section. For the CRS control I put the modulation level to 100%. An for the main Level (volume / gain) I set the enitial to 0 an added the modulation level to about 2 o’clock.

For OSC 2 I went to the Analog bank again and chose a wavetable that was a bit more interesting. Here I went with the MATRIXY C64.
Again I mapped the CSR (pitch modulation parameter) and the Level to LFO 1. I didn’t go quite to 100% on the CRS and went to about 2 o’clock on the Level. This time I did modulate the Wave Table Position (WT POS) from 0 to 100%. Note also that I dropped the OCT from 0 to -1. This just means I dropped it down and octave.
Here I am just going to leave with the graphic. I pretty much used the defaults with the exception of the dry/wet amounts and the EQ settings. These are easy enough to copy if you look at the picture.

Serum is a dream tabular wave synthesizer with really high quality sound, a visual and creatively oriented interface, it has a built-in wave table editor to make music not a tedious process. The synthesizer presents a huge number of wave tables, and of course the ability to create your own. A unison generator that gives up to 16 votes and allows you to flexibly adjust the volume-to-child ratio between them. The sound is very lively, and most importantly modern.
• Ability to import or create your own Wavetables.
• Ultra – pure oscillators – in short, the developers assure that the sound in Serum will be clean and almost transparent.
• Advanced modulation capabilities
• The ability to work with the wave table in real time
• A large number of filters
• Many effects and the ability to modulate each of them.
• Extended unison – up to 16 votes per oscillator. Several modes of unison and other chips.
• Serum includes 450 presets, 144 wave tables.
